A Prayer Journey with Joshua

Do You Want to Build an Altar?

Dr. Chris Carrasco
Altars and memorials are built primarily to remind us and future generations of a significant event or person. In scripture, many altars are built in memory of what God had done. Joshua builds one such altar from river rocks from the Jordan. In Acts we read that our prayers and gifts are memorials to God. Through praying, journaling, and acting on our prayers, we are not only reminding ourselves of God’s faithfulness, but we are building a memorial to strengthen the faith of future generations. Your prayers do not just impact you. They have a ripple effect that influences more people than you will ever know.

A Prayer Journey with Joshua

A Prayer Journey with Joshua Based on Draw the Circle: The 40 Day Prayer Challenge A Summer Worship Series Have your prayers become stagnant? Do you long to see God at work in fresh ways? Are you ready to revitalize your prayer life? In our first Summer Worship Series based on Mark Batterson’s Draw the Circle: A 40 Day Prayer Challenge, we will use Joshua’s journey to teach us to dream big, pray hard, and think long. This six week series offers a new way to pray as you are invited to draw a circle around specific prayers, be brave in your prayer requests, have the faith to act on your prayers, pray with persistence and patience, build future memories of God’s faithfulness, and make a covenant to always serve God. To enhance the worship series, you are also invited to join a weekly small group (whether via Zoom or in person) for six weeks as well as engage in daily prayer. Oswald Chambers said, “The idea of prayer is not in order to get answers from God: prayer is perfect and complete oneness with God.” Join us in June and July as we get down on our knees and pray in God’s will for God’s glory. June 7------What Do You Want Me To Do for You? Luke 18:35-43; Joshua 1:1-11 Drawing a circle in prayer means to answer the question Jesus asked a blind man, “What do you want me to do for you?” Our first step is to know what to circle and then make it our prayer focus. Pick a problem, or promise, or person to draw a circle around. For Joshua, it was a promise: “Every place that the sole of your foot will tread upon I have given to you, as I promised to Moses.” Prayer puts us in the presence of God so we can discern God’s will in order to bring glory to God. In prayer, we don’t tell our agenda to God, we discern God’s agenda for us. Another promise God gave to Joshua is also for us, “As I was with Moses, so I will be with you; I will not fail you or forsake you.” So, what will you draw a circle around? What is your Jericho? June 14------What Is the Bravest Prayer You Can Pray? Ephesians 3:14-21; Joshua 6:1-5 God is bigger than big and closer than close. God-sized dreams are beyond our ability to make happen, so that when they are realized, only God receives the glory. God is “able to accomplish abundantly far more than all we can ask or imagine.” While no prayer is too small, no prayer is too big either. Dream big in God’s will for God’s glory. Nothing will keep us more fervently in prayer than a big dream. What has God placed on your heart? The prayer you can barely believe God for? Then, be ready. God might ask you to do some pretty strange things, like walking in circles. June 28------Are You Praying ASAP or ALAT? Luke 11:5-13; Joshua 14:6-12 Oftentimes we pray asking for God to answer ASAP (as soon as possible). Yet, the Bible offers several examples of those who pray ALAT (as long as it takes). “Keep asking, seeking, and knocking,” Jesus instructs his disciples as he tells them a pa
